This work addresses the evaluation of the shear strength of concrete masonry walls, internally reinforced with GFRP bars, under in-plane loading. The investigation included the execution of two types of tests on the walls: diagonal compression under monotonic loads and direct shear with pseudo-dynamic loads. In total 12 walls were built, 6 of which were tested under diagonal compression and the remaining 6 under direct shear, each group with its respective unreinforced control specimen. The independent variables under consideration were the horizontal reinforcement ratio, the spacing between bars, the GFRP bar’s diameter and the wall’s height. As a result from the current work, it could be stated that the use of GFRP bars improves the shear strength of the masonry, since an increase of up to 313% in the walls tested under diagonal compression and up to 163% in the walls tested under direct shear was observed, which makes the GFRP bars an attractive alternative to the commonly used steel reinforcing bars, especially in aggressive environments where steel is severely affected by corrosion.
