Traditional methods such as the ACI method is a method based on preparing a test mix for a constant volume, thus fixing the amount of aggregates because they are part of the filler material, leaving cement and water as variables.
Summarizing the ACI method appears very detailed in books with punctual specifications of the aggregates to be used, in which the water-cement ratio and the slump are the only variables within the mix.
Knowing this, and being consistent with the above mentioned, the mix design of the Cordon and Thorpe method is to fix the water/cement ratio (A/C) and vary the amount of coarse and fine aggregate working with the slump and comparing the base mix of the ACI method.
As a first step, the characterization of the materials was obtained for their respective analysis.
Next, the size of the aggregates was analyzed, the type of materials estimated, the mixing water and then the design resistance was determined by means of the ACI method.
Once the design was determined, the water/cement ratio (A/C = 0.55) was set, making three different types of mixes and thus varying the proportions of the aggregates, determining the number of mixes to be made.
The dosages were selected to make the respective concrete mixes, the selected material was corrected for moisture and the condition of the sss was obtained for the mixes considered by Cordon and Thorpe by selecting the quantities to be cast.
