Context: This paper presents the design and development of an electronic device that operates as a satellite backup channel for automatic vehicle location (AVL) equipment, whose only communication channel is the cellular network. Method: The design, manufacture and assembly of the hardware followed 4 phases, and it was aligned with the IPC 2221 standard. This allowed improving the design experience and guaranteed the correct electrical operation in the final product. Results: The information sent by the developed device corresponds to the data generated by the AVL device, which indicates that the information processing was correctly designed. Additionally, it was possible to obtain a functional and versatile device in which the blocks were correctly integrated; its firmware was designed to receive future updates that improved and expanded its capacity and compatibility with other devices. Conclusions: The final product, which works with the Iridium network, seeks to satisfy the technological requirements of the freight transport sector in Colombia with a low-cost, versatile, and easily integrated solution. The implementation of this type of technologies expands the capacity of tracking mobile assets, even in places where there is no cellular network coverage.

Este artículo construye y analiza tres escenarios energéticos en Colombia para explorar el impacto de la integración de fuentes de energía eléctrica que utilizan recursos renovables en escenarios a largo plazo incluyendo impacto medio ambiental. Los escenarios energéticos prospectivos permiten determinar evidencias del nivel de integración de las fuentes de energía eléctrica renovables en el sistema interconectado nacional acorde a decisiones de políticas energéticas en el corto y mediano plazo. Un escenario considera la evolución usual sin considerar la integración de recursos renovables considerando únicamente la inclusión de nuevas centrales térmicas a carbón y gas natural. Los otros escenarios consideran aspectos que dilucidan la integración de fuentes no convencionales de energía a diferentes niveles según decisiones en el corto plazo acerca de la planeación de integración de nuevas fuentes tanto convencionales como no convencionales.

This article presents the identification and evaluation of the impacts generated during the use and disposal of sanitary Pads and menstrual cups. The methodology adopted for the environmental assessment is based on the Conesa methodology [4]. Likewise, to determine the environmental significance based on the evidence or probability of occurrence, laboratory analyses were conducted to evaluate some physicochemical parameters to two human menstrual blood samples and the amount of solid waste generated by the use of each was determined for each one of these products taking into account a population sample. As a result, the quality of the disposed liquid waste was determined; that is, menstrual blood, and possible impacts were identified on the biotic, abiotic, and socio-economic media, which were compared for each one of the products. The most relevant negative impacts were "Alteration of the local economy" present in the activity called disposal of sanitary pads’ solid waste and "customs" present in the activity called the use of menstrual cups.

The 3.5GHz band is an optimal candidate for 5G networks due to its propagation characteristics and massive bandwidth. However, services like the Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) are using this band in several countries. Therefore, this paper presents a coexistence study of the Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) and FSS services in the 3500-3700 MHz in Colombia. Simulations were done in realistic scenarios in the city of Bogota, Colombia. Preliminary results show that critical scenarios are the ones from the LTE eNodeB (eNB) and Users Equipment (UE) nodes to the FSS earth stations. The study includes the analysis of Guard Bands (GB) and arrival angles into the Protection Distances (PD). Results show that the PD is highly dependent on the angle of the interfering signal and the GB used. The PD for a cochannel interference in a suburban scenario is higher than 250km, in the worst-case scenario, and could be reduced down to 17.5 km if a 25 MHz GB is included and the angular difference of the interfering LTE-A signal is 42⁰. Moreover, our results show that the PD needed for interference from UE are 100 times less compared to the eNB ones.

The objective of this study is to discuss selected viruses including COVID-19 and their potential elimination processes in hot springs. Studies in Colombia are limited and this scientific discussion provides necessary information regarding these viruses. This includes studies both in Colombia and international levels on the following subjects: i) the presence of viruses in hot springs, ii) the non- oxidative water treatment in hot springs, iii) the elimination strategies of viruses; and iv) the influence of COVID-19 in hot springs. The results of this discussion indicate that in order for thermal waters to guarantee the elimination of the viruses originating from faecal and nonfaecal derived, and the COVID-19 virus, a monitoring scheme is required to identify an effective disinfection of waters to control these pathogens.
