When a clayey soil is exposed to desiccation, water evaporates from the surface. During dry periods, the soil may suffer from shrinking phenomena, the saturation degree decreases and formation of cracks begins. At the same time, an overconsolidated soil appears at the surface of the deposit. Some previous studies devoted to this problem have highlighted the impact of cracks on desiccated profiles. However, these analyses have been carried out without considering the suction effect. The present study examines the specific case of the cracked soils found in the area of Sabana de Bogotá in Colombia. In this research, some soil models are tested using the Institut Français des Sciences et Technologies des Transports, de l'Aménagement et des Réseaux's geotechnical centrifuge. In this paper, the experimental procedure is first described. Then, the experimental results for the bearing capacity are presented. Finally, an analysis of the bearing capacity is carried out by considering the matric suction effect. This analysis compares different theoretical methods used to calculate the bearing capacity of shallow foundations resting on unsaturated soils with the experimental results obtained using the centrifuge. The results of the analysis underline the necessity of considering suction for the computation of the bearing capacity of unsaturated soils.

The present article aims to publicize the characterization of the clays that are included between 127th Street and La Caro, in the city of Bogotá. For this, basic laboratory tests were taken into account (soil moisture, Atterberg limits, unconfined compression and consolidation) and field tests (CPT and SDMT), with which they were evaluated for the undrained resistance parameter (Su ) the correlations proposed by Skempton, Jamiolkowski, Mesri and Itansbo, and for the OCR parameter, the correlations proposed by Stas and Kulhawy, Mayne and Mitchell were used. With the respective evaluation of the expressions raised by the mentioned authors, a comparison was made with the field results (SU, OCR), to later define the characteristic correlation equations for the soil under study. With these aforementioned correlation equations, an approximation to the SU and OCR results can be obtained, from the laboratory and field tests.

In this paper were analyzed the desiccation cracks produced in a clay soil using fractal mathematic. This soil, composed of Kaolin and Bentonite, was studied in four different sizes of mold, with the aim to know how is the influence of this parameter in the formation of the cracks, having as a result, a numerical characterization of a chaotic phenomenon, which is relevant in clay soil in dry seasons.Subsequently, this result could be associated with the properties and parameters of the soil, thus knowing the cracks response to environmental factors, the mineralogy composition of the soil and other factors. Conducting a fractal analysis through box counting method, it is found the fractal dimension of a mold in a specific time, which is going to be related not only to the others molds, but also to the others monitoring times, with the intention to discover the relations that bind together the time, the size and the fractal dimension. The main connections that were identified are: the ratio among the fractal dimension and the size of the mold is inversely proportional, and the ratio among the fractal dimension and the cracking time is directly proportional.

When oil spills occur in the soil due to gravity and capillary forces, these fluids move vertically and horizontally through the strata; then the following question arises: what happens in the geotechnical properties and the mineralogical composition of a clay soil of low plasticity with the presence of diesel? To answer this question, laboratory tests with controlled variables were required. Thus, the methodology involved taking the samples to the air and then adding water and diesel treatment of 0%, 1%, 3% and 6%, with a one-week exposure time under controlled temperature and humidity conditions. Laboratory tests were done to determine moisture content, specific gravity of solids, Atterberg limits and unconfined compressive strength. The analysis of mineralogy with X-ray diffraction (XRD), dust method, was performed for samples with 0% and 6% diesel treatment. It is important to specify that the effect of temperature on the performance of the tests was evaluated, if the presence of diesel in the soil is unknown, a temperature of 110 ± 5 ° C is used, and if the presence of diesel is known in the soil a temperature of 50 ± 5 ° C is used. The results of the investigation verified the changes in the geotechnical properties and the uncertainty in the estimation of the moisture content and the specific gravity of the solids, but the mineralogical composition was not affected; however, the percentage of micas was reduced.

El presente documento contiene una revisión sobre la prueba de piezocono o CPTU,incluyendo: antecedentes históricos y experiencias sobre la prueba, normas, estándares y recomendaciones para la ejecución de la prueba. Se incluye también un resumen sobre las principales teorías y análisis para definir: la estratigrafía del subsuelo, así como las teorías y procedimientos para estimar: El tipo de suelo, la resistencia no drenada de suelos arcillosos (su), la relación de sobreconsolidación (RSC), el módulo de rigidez (M), el coeficiente de consolidación (cv) y el módulo de elasticidad no drenado (Eu). Simultáneamente se muestran los resultados obtenidos tanto de la prueba CPTU y los ensayos de laboratorio, hechos de forma paralela en dos sitios específicos del departamento de Boyacá. El primero localizado en zona urbana del municipio de Tunja, y el segundo en la vereda Punta Larga del municipio de Nobsa. Los resultados de las pruebas hechas en campo y en laboratorio se compararon para validar las correlaciones existentes en la literatura internacional. Finalmente se hacen conclusiones acerca de la aplicación de la prueba en este tipo de depósitos, así como las recomendaciones para la realización de la prueba, interpretación de los resultados y futuras investigaciones al respecto.
