Abstract

One hundred years have passed since the Bolsheviks took over the Winter Palace in the city of Petrograd. It was a little disruptive, with little violence and carried out by a small group of insurgents. The taking of the Palace was a deeply symbolic event, because that building represented the highest authority of power of a decadent empire, and to take the building was, symbolically, to take power. While the October Revolution began as a discrete event, its echoes would be global and transcend all corners of the globe. The taking of the Winter Palace was an act that marked the end of an order, a before and an after, a world that would never be what it was. This historical event is one of the most controversial of the twentieth century. Many historians have argued that 1917 marked markedly the beginning of a new stage in world history and that there emerged a series of dynamics and tensions that would manifest throughout the century.

Han pasado cien años desde que los bolcheviques se tomaran el Palacio de Invierno en la ciudad de Petrogrado. Fue un hecho poco disruptivo, con escasa violencia y llevado a cabo por un pequeño grupo de insurgentes. La toma del Palacio fue un acontecimiento profundamente simbólico, pues ese edificio representaba la máxima autoridad de poder de un imperio decadente, y tomarse el edificio era, simbólicamente, tomarse el poder. Si bien la Revolución de Octubre empezó como un hecho discreto, sus ecos serían mundiales y trascenderían todos los rincones del globo. La toma del Palacio de Invierno fue un acto que marcó el fin de un orden, un antes y un después, un mundo que nunca sería lo que fue. Este acontecimiento histórico es uno de los más controversiales del siglo XX. Muchos historiadores han argumentado que 1917 marcó pronunciadamente el inicio de una nueva etapa de la historia mundial y que de ahí se desprendieron una serie de dinámicas y tensiones que se manifestarían a lo largo del siglo.
