The present work includes a compilation of the technical fundamentals that determine the applicability of the membrane bioreactor (BRM), as an alternative in wastewater treatment. The second chapter presents the historical background of this technology and how, over the years, they have been improving until they evolve to the technology currently found. In chapter three, the types of membrane filtration processes, the materials used for their manufacture and the configurations of the modules used are described. In the fourth chapter the design criteria to build a BRM are considered: microbiological foundations, filtering flow, mass transport, operation parameters, loading criteria, aeration, sludge production and a procedure for the design of the BRM is described . In the fifth chapter the considerations for the maintenance of the BRM are included. Chapter six presents a contrast between the process of conventional activated sludge and the process with membranes. Finally, there are cases of membrane bioreactors in plants optimized with this technology, which have demonstrated a guaranteed effluent quality.
