This paper addresses the assessment of seismic vulnerability in informal housing in Colombia, in the context of the country's high and intermediate seismic hazard, the prevalence of informal housing, and the lack of adequate methodologies to assess the large-scale vulnerability of this type of buildings. A detailed review of common structural systems in informal dwellings, such as confined and unreinforced masonry, is presented, describing the main failure modes and strength characteristics of these systems. In addition, seismic vulnerability assessment methodologies allowed by the Colombian Seismic Resistant Building Regulations (NSR-10) are mentioned, as well as other alternatives and the methodologies proposed in the document AIS 410-23 of the Colombian Association of Earthquake Engineering and the one proposed by Gustavo Chio Cho and Esperanza Maldonado “Seismic Vulnerability Index based on expert opinion”. The study focuses on the Mirador de Corinto neighborhood in Soacha, an informal settlement with more than a thousand houses, which faces challenges of legalization and access to public services due to its zoning as a high hazard zone for mass removal processes. The research focuses on the application of two complementary methodologies for the evaluation of seismic vulnerability in this neighborhood, using assessment campaigns whose results were consolidated in a geographic information system. In summary, the thesis addresses the issue of seismic vulnerability in informal housing in Colombia, provides a detailed analysis of common structural systems and seismic vulnerability assessment methodologies allowed by the Colombian regulatory framework, and focuses on the application of two complementary methodologies for seismic vulnerability assessment in the Mirador de Corinto neighborhood in Soacha. The paper offers an approach that combines theoretical aspects with practical applications in a particular context, contributing to the knowledge and understanding of structural vulnerability assessment in informal housing in Colombia.
