This paper presents the way in which the tool "genetic decomposition", defined from the APOS theory, favors the
understanding of mathematical objects used in university mathematics courses. The previous as part of a research
project, developed in the Colombian School of Engineering Julio Garavito, with the objective of identifying the
ways to understand the linear differential equation of second order that models a spring mass system with free
motion damped; Within the results there are some difficulties to understand the object of study and the need to
design information collection instruments that complement the observations of teachers in class.
