Over the years the challenges in engineering have been changing, day by day

load requests and efforts to which they are subjected during their useful life. A
An example of the above is concrete, a material that has been reinventing itself to
guarantee good performance under specific conditions such as: aggressive environments,
high temperatures, construction limitations, among other scenarios that have driven the
research and development of technologies such as ultra-high-performance concrete
(UHPC) and ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced (UHPRFC), materials that, thanks to their
a careful dosage and modification in its components have allowed to achieve
far superior mechanical characteristics compared to conventional concrete such
such as: greater resistance to compression, bending and traction efforts, increased
stiffness, ductile behavior and noticeable improvement in durability.
The development of these new technologies represents an advance in engineering and increases the
possibilities in the selection of alternatives allowing choosing the one that best suits according to
be the technical, economic, environmental conditions, among others. Particularly, the
UHPC and UHPRFC have received different uses ranging from the construction of new works,
to the repair or maintenance of existing structures. Specifically, throughout the
This writing seeks to propose an alternative rehabilitation for the bridge La
Libertad, which was rebuilt in 2005 and in the last inspection report
main carried out by the Bridge Administration System of Colombia (SIPUCOL)
presented a series of pathologies that gave rise to construction activities for the
rehabilitation of the bridge in 2015, with the purpose of prolonging its useful life.
It is important to remember that bridges are infrastructure works that have a high
economic and social impact, since they allow overcoming depressions and obstacles facilitating the
mobilization of people and goods, reducing time, costs and increasing the
economic potential of a population. Additionally, it is important to emphasize
performance of maintenance activities to this type of structures, as well as the planning
and execution of rehabilitation works that allow to repair pathologies to bring the
structure to conditions of durability, resistance and operation similar or superior
to the initial ones, with which it seeks to extend the useful life, having a favorable impact at the
economic and environmental.
