Hot springs have traditionally been a tourist attraction in many parts of the world, such as Japan, Canada, Taiwan among others. During the peak tourist season, it is usually discharged into streams without treatment, which can affect the quality of the receiving water, causing negative impacts to the aquatic ecosystems. Downstream ecological impacts of several major spa recreational sites in different parts of the world have been studied, and it has been found that wastewater discharges of hot springs have adverse ecological effects. The mineral composition in hot springs, derived mainly from groundwater, is usually greater than that of stream water. Studies carried out with models such as QUAL2K (or Q2K), the modernized version of the QUAL2E (or Q2E), simulate the effect of the hot spring discharges on surface water sources, mainly negative in nature. Despite the negative consequences of the impacts on ecosystems derived from hot springs’ wastewater, it is interesting to note that there are regulations for wastewater discharges – including backwash water from swimming pools – into rivers and sewers (e.g., Germany and Canada), but not specifically for hot springs discharge. Nonetheless, this evidence indicates a necessity for the authorities to increase the control of the use of hot springs and the discharge of their untreated waters. In Colombia, Resolution 631 of 2015 regulates the discharge of wastewater into rivers and sewers. Yet, it does not consider parameters for the discharge of hot springs. However, the authors deem it necessary to advance in the investigation on the contamination of the wastewaters coming from hot springs, and think about a sustainable tourism of hot springs.

This article presents the regulations in the quality of water in swimming pools and drinking water in Germany, Canada, and Colombia, with a comparison to existing regulations and standards of quality of hot springs. Canada, Germany, and Colombia stipulate that drinking water must be free from unsafe levels of substances chemicals and pathogens, specifying guidelines for the microbiological and chemical parameters. However, in the case of hot springs Canada and Germany do not possess specific regulations or standards, but apply the same microbial and chemical requirements for swimming pools according to Public Swimming Pools Regulation of Canada and the standard DIN 19643 as well as the Infection Protection Act of Germany. Colombia does not have regulations or standards pertaining to the quality of hot springs, as established in article 6 of Decree 554 of 2015, and it does not apply the swimming pool regulations to hot springs.

The objective of this study is to present a preventive measures pertaining to COVID-19 in swimming pools and hot springs in Europe, Canada, United States, and Colombia. After the start of pandemic, all swimming pools, beaches, and hot springs in Colombia were closed. . Currently, official management plans have yet to be presented for the opening of hot springs and swimming pools. However, the European Association of Water Parks presents a twostage reopening plan for public recreation centres, while countries such as United States, Australia, Canada, China, and Austria follow similar measures. Among the most representative management measures mandated to prevent the spread of the virus, medical authorities from a variety of governments have collectively recommended the following: i) maintaining rigorous social distancing, ii) cleaning or disinfection of surfaces and common areas routinly, iii) maintaining healthy environments and most importantly, iv) personal care (ie. if not feeling well, stay home and do not put others at risk).

The objective of this study is to discuss selected viruses including COVID-19 and their potential elimination processes in hot springs. Studies in Colombia are limited and this scientific discussion provides necessary information regarding these viruses. This includes studies both in Colombia and international levels on the following subjects: i) the presence of viruses in hot springs, ii) the non- oxidative water treatment in hot springs, iii) the elimination strategies of viruses; and iv) the influence of COVID-19 in hot springs. The results of this discussion indicate that in order for thermal waters to guarantee the elimination of the viruses originating from faecal and nonfaecal derived, and the COVID-19 virus, a monitoring scheme is required to identify an effective disinfection of waters to control these pathogens.
