dc.description.abstractResearchers report the number of cycles corresponding to the lower strain rate in a permanent deformation test, known as flow number (FN), as a good asphalt mix stability indicator; however, its variability has limited its implementation. Current procedures for calculating FN rely on data smoothing techniques, which can yield very different values for the same specimen if different moving average periods are used. A new methodology for determining FN is proposed by modeling the permanent strain versus load cycles curve as a continuous function. Data from cold-mix replicate samples were analyzed and compared, and a substantial reduction in FN variability was observed using the proposed methodology. Use of FN to select the data to determine the power model parameters was also evaluated. Results indicate that establishing FN as the upper cut-off point of the data used to fit the power-model produces a slight reduction in parameter estimates variability. Adopting the proposed model could be useful for permanent deformation characterization and as a unifying criterion for selecting the data used for that purpose.eng
dc.description.abstractLos investigadores señalan el número de ciclos correspondiente a la velocidad de deformación más baja en un ensayo de deformación permanente, conocido como número de flujo (FN), como un buen indicador de la estabilidad de las mezclas asfálticas; sin embargo, su variabilidad ha limitado su aplicación. Los procedimientos actuales para calcular el FN se basan en técnicas de suavizado de datos, que pueden arrojar valores muy diferentes para la misma probeta si se utilizan diferentes periodos de media móvil. Se propone una nueva metodología para determinar el FN modelando la curva de deformación permanente frente a los ciclos de carga como una función continua. Se analizaron y compararon datos de muestras replicadas de mezcla en frío, y se observó una reducción sustancial de la variabilidad del FN utilizando la metodología propuesta. También se evaluó el uso de FN para seleccionar los datos para determinar los parámetros del modelo de potencia. Los resultados indican que establecer FN como punto de corte superior de los datos utilizados para ajustar el modelo de potencia produce una ligera reducción de la variabilidad de las estimaciones de los parámetros. La adopción del modelo propuesto podría ser útil para la caracterización de la deformación permanente y como criterio unificador para la selección de los datos utilizados para tal fin.spa
