The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which caregivers can be used to provide proxy responses for dementia clients in a study on the acceptance of GPS technology. Methods: Forty-five client–caregiver dyads used one of three GPS devices. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) was used to create two questionnaires, one for dementia clients and one for caregivers, as proxies. Spearman rho bivariate correlations of responses for each UTAUT construct were used to compare the client and caregiver responses post-usage of the GPS devices. Results: The mean age of the clients was 76.02 years (SD = 11.5). Overall, after using the GPS devices, the responses of the clients and caregivers were correlated and statistically significant (rxy Overall summative scale = 0.550). In addition, 4 out of 6 constructs of the UTAUT were correlated and statistically significant (p < 0.05) (rxy Performance Expectancy = 0.160; rxy Social Influence = 0.478; rxy Behavioural Intention to Use = 0.347; and rxy Actual Use = 0.570). Conclusion: The degree of agreement between the caregivers and clients, especially for the constructs intention to use and actual use of the GPS technology, suggested that caregivers can respond on behalf of dementia clients on technology acceptance questionnaires.

This paper aims to measure what are the students’ perceived learning outcome achievements after finishing their clinical engineering major courses. This is a pre- post-test with no control group study design. Forty students were involved in this pilot study. A paper-based survey composed of a demographic section and a 5-point Likert (“1” is strongly disagree and “5” is strongly agree) section measured the students’ perceived learning outcome achievements after exposing them to clinical engineering major courses. A Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann-Whitney U test statistics were conducted to test the two hypotheses of this study. Our analysis showed statistically significant results between the pre-survey mean and SD: 21.10 SD 3.54; and between the postsurvey mean and SD: 22.75 SD 3.68 (Z -2.12, p<0.033), indicating that overall, students’ perceived learning outcome achievements after exposing them to clinical engineering major courses had significantly improved by the end of the major. Also, statistically significant results were found between the post-survey mean and SD: 3.94 SD 0.61 learning outcome perceptions and between the students’ actual marks mean and SD: 4.53 SD 0.22 (-5.00, p<0.000), indicating the students had low confidence in their learning outcomes after completing their clinical engineering major.

After their ﬁrst year roughly 50% of engineering students do not continue in that major. One cause could be that students have little idea as to what the profession of engineeringis about. Freshman introductory courses provide a ﬁrst approach to the engineering profession. Therefore, understanding the role of introductory engineering courses to increasing student knowledge of the profession is a relevant issue. The purpose of the study is to describe how student perceptions of the engineering profession overall change as a result of their educational experience in an introductory biomedical engineering course.This is a pre-post-test with no control group study design.One class(n =41)on a ﬁrst-year biomedical engineering course participated in a hybrid Project-based-learning (PBL)-lecture learning strategy. A survey composed of a demographic and 5-point Likert (‘‘1’’ is strongly disagree and ‘‘5’’ is strongly agree) sections measured students’ perceptions of the engineering profession and was administered (paper-based) to all the students enrolled on this course. The students’ perceptions of the engineering profession were pooled into 3 main groups of skills, i.e. Technical skills, Professional skills, and Project management skills. Wilcoxon signed-rank test statistics were conducted to analyze the research question. Our analysis showed statistically signiﬁcant results (pre-survey mean and SD: 4.01, 0.07; and post-survey mean and SD: 4.21, 0.05, p < 0.003), indicating the students’ overall perceptions of the engineering profession had signiﬁcantly improved by the end of the course. The results indicated that the students’ overall perceptions of the engineering profession had signiﬁcantly improved by the end of the introductory course.

Information and telecommunication technologies can provide a low-cost method for managing frailty more proactively. This study aims to examine the range and extent of information and telecommunication technologies for managing frailty in older adults, their technology readiness level, the evidence, and the associated outcomes. A systematic literature review was conducted. Four databases were searched for studies: Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Web of Science. In total, we included 19 studies (out of 9,930) for the data abstraction. Overall, our findings indicate that (1) the proposed frailty phenotype is the most common ground truth to be used for assessing frailty; (2) the most common uses of information and telecommunication technologies for managing frailty are detection, and monitoring and detection, while interventional studies on frailty are very rare; (3) the five main types of information and telecommunication technologies for managing frailty in older adults are information and telecommunication technology-based platforms, smartphones, telemonitoring (home monitoring), wearable sensors and devices (commercial off-the-shelf), and multimedia formats for online access; (4) the technology readiness level of information and telecommunication technologies for managing frailty in older adults is the “Technology Demonstration” level, i.e., not yet ready to be operated in an actual operating environment; and (5) the level of evidence is still low for information and telecommunication technology studies that manage frailty in older adults. Twenty-four students doing medical devices courses I and II with a test in the simulation center of a Biomedical Engineering Program participated in this pilot study. A paper-based survey composed of a demographic and 5-point Likert (“1” is strongly disagree and “5” is strongly agree) measured the students’ perceived learning outcome achievements after exposing them to medical devices courses. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Mann-Whitney U Test statistics were conducted to test the two hypotheses of this study. Our analysis showed statistically significant results between the pre-survey sum mean and SD: 7.50, 1.31; and between the post-survey mean and SD: 8.56, 1.15, p=0.015, indicating the students’ perceived learning outcome achievements after putting them through medical devices courses I and II had significantly improved by the end of the courses. Also, no statistically significant results were found between the post-survey mean and SD: 4.37, 0.57 learning outcome perceptions or between the students’ actual marks mean and SD: 4.58, 0.18, p=0.28), indicating no differences between what the students perceived they had learned compared with what they had really learned.

Background: Prevention and management of chronic conditions is a priority for many healthcare systems. Personal health records have been suggested to facilitate implementation of chronic care programs. However, patients’ attitude towards personal health records (PHRs) can significantly affect the adoption rates and use of PHRs. Objectives: to evaluate the attitude of patients with Type II diabetes towards using a PHR to manage their condition. Methods: We used a cross-sectional exploratory pilot study. Fifty-four (54) patients used a PHR to monitor and record their blood glucose levels, diet, and activities for 30 days, and to communicate with their clinicians. At the end of the study, patients responded to a survey based on three constructs borrowed from different technology acceptance frameworks: relative advantage, job fit, and perceived usefulness. A multivariate predictive model was formed using partial least squaring technique (PLS) and the effect of each construct on the patients’ attitude towards system use was evaluated. Patients also participated in a semi-structured interview. Results: We found a significant positive correlation between job fit and attitude (JF → ATT = +0.318, p<0.01). There was no statistical evidence of any moderating or mediating effect of other main constructs or any of the confounding factors (i.e., age, gender, time after diagnosed) on attitude. Conclusion: The attitude of patients towards using PHR in management of their diabetes was positive. Their attitude was mainly influenced by the extent to which the system helped them better perform activities and self-manage their condition.

Clinical studies used commercially well-established electronic pillboxes with a high TRL. New electronic pillboxes in development had a low TRL. The discovered outcome was mainly adherence to medication. The overall mean adherence to medication regimens for all the studies using an electronic pillbox was higher than the gold standard of a good adherence level cut-off point (mean adherence 88.8%>80%). However, we found a large variation in this variable (SD = 10.7). With regard to an older adult population’s adherence to medication regimens, for the outcome variable of those who had undergone a kidney transplant, the clinical evidence that electronic pillboxes have a positive impact was strong (1b); for those with a chronic hepatitis C medical condition, the clinical evidence was medium (3), and for those with arterial hypertension and multiple chronic (diabetes and hypertension) medical conditions, the clinical evidence was weak (5).
