In the field of geotechnical design, the concept of redundancy has been presented as an alternative to reduce uncertainty and avoid the failure of structures due to human error. Accordingly, the need has arisen to generate more sophisticated systems in which the development of designs better represents the engineering challenges that arise.
In response to this need, the finite element method (FEM) has become very popular because it allows the analysis and design of structures. Among the different challenges that arise in civil engineering are the analysis of soil-structure interaction, which is a problem that needs to be investigated and innovated. This problem currently involves, among many other professionals, the structural engineer and the geotechnical engineer, who are in charge of structural calculation and geotechnical design, respectively.
In the soil-structure interaction mechanism, the influence of the structure on the soil and vice versa is recognized. Therefore, it is possible to identify the possible problems and the respective solutions. However, it is valid to clarify that the numerical methodologies used by both areas in the analyses are different and do not emulate a true soil-structure interaction condition.
In accordance with the above, this work develops a transition element that allows the modeling and analysis of soil-structure interaction in static condition, in 3 dimensions, with the finite element method to model the soil and, simultaneously, the use of matrix analysis to simulate the structure.
The case study taken corresponds to a square column (0.5 x 0.5m) of 3m high connected to a concrete footing through the transition element, finally, the footing is supported on the same homogeneous soil. Three forces (Fx, Fy, Fz) and three moments (Mx, My, Mz) are applied at the top of the column.
For the case study described, four different models were considered, in which the characteristics of the column and the soil were maintained. As variables, the forces and moments, the transition element and, finally, the dimension of the mesh representing the soil and the footing were handled.
Additionally, in order to corroborate the results obtained with the designed transition element, a model composed of a finite element mesh was made in which the column, foundation and soil system were considered. The results of the analysis showed that, although the results are not the same, the values obtained are in the same order of magnitude.
According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that the dimensioned transition element allows the modeling and analysis of soil-structure interaction, with the finite element method to model the soil and, simultaneously, the use of matrix analysis for the simulation of the structure. Similarly, the methodology presented for dimensioning the transition element between the column and the soil allows for compatibility between the matrix analysis of structures and the finite element method. The dimensioned transition element allows estimating the deformations and rotations resulting from the interaction of the structure with the soil.
