Energy dissipation capacity is defined as "the capacity of a structural system, structural element, or a section of a structural element, to work within the inelastic range of response without losing its strength" (Theran Cabello, 2011). This capacity is quantified by means of a Ro coefficient. In the Colombian context, the seismic resistant standard (NSR-10) oversees assigning values to this coefficient based on the materials and the structural system with the objective of protecting people's lives and at the same time ensuring that the structures withstand the seismic design movements, dissipating part of the energy in the form of inelastic deformations, without generating significant damage, safeguarding the heritage.
The determination of the Ro coefficient is still the subject of analysis and research as there is no consensus as to the values and the way to calculate them. Different countries have chosen to assign in their codes or standards values that are considered adequate to the seismic conditions of each nation. In Colombia, the values established for the Ro energy dissipation coefficient range between 1 and 8, values that depend on the structural system, the seismic resistance system (horizontal forces) and the resistance system for vertical loads.
The current Regulation (NSR-10) gives the values for structural designers to perform the calculations, knowing that these values are not characteristic of the structures to be built, i.e. they are approximations of values that give safety ranges, but they are not the real values of the capacity with which the buildings perform energy dissipation; they are values assumed to be able to comply with the deformations and to be able to safeguard both life and heritage, but "however, at the end of the design it is not common, as it should be done, to check what is the dissipation capacity that the designed structure is able to assume. " (Murillo Rivas, 2017).
This work aims to evaluate the energy dissipation coefficient assumed in the design with the one obtained from a nonlinear static analysis and with the one obtained experimentally by building and testing a part of the structure, consisting of a flat portal frame of a three-dimensional building. These tests are carried out in the materials and structures laboratory of block H of the Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería Julio Garavito.
